PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

How to Prepare for Your Oral Surgery Appointment

Following your pre-operative instructions carefully helps ensure a safe and smooth experience on the day of your procedure. Please review the information below and contact Arrow Oral Surgery if you have any questions before your appointment.

General Instructions

  • Patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves if possible.
  • Take any pre-operative medications or sedatives exactly as directed.
  • A responsible adult driver must bring you to and from your appointment.
  • If you use an inhaler, please bring it with you on the day of surgery.
  • Unless instructed otherwise, you may take your daily medications with a small sip of water.
  • Bring any removable dental devices discussed during your consultation (e.g., flipper, Essix retainer, or denture).

If You Are Receiving Local Anesthesia or Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

You will be awake and alert during the procedure.

  • You may eat and drink normally before your appointment.
  • Continue with your usual daily routine unless otherwise instructed.

If You Are Receiving IV Sedation (“Asleep”)

You will be in a relaxed, sleep-like state during the procedure.

To ensure your safety:

  • Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before surgery.
  • Clear liquids are allowed up to 2 hours prior to your appointment. Clear liquids include:
    • Water
    • Fruit juice without pulp
    • Black coffee or tea (no milk or cream)
    • Carbonated beverages
    • Electrolyte drinks (such as Gatorade or Pedialyte)
  • Avoid makeup, jewelry, nail polish, gels, or acrylics.
  • A licensed adult driver must check in with you the morning of your procedure.
    • Rideshare services (Uber, Lyft, taxis) do not qualify as valid drivers.
    • Your driver must remain on the premises for the entire duration of your procedure.
